The Coalition for Energy Justice (CEJ – PWYP Egypt) seeks to empower Egyptian communities with accessible, transparent, and reliable data and information on energy governance in order to contribute to sustainable and equitable energy policies in Egypt. Through education, advocacy, and collaboration, they aim to bridge the gap between civil society, private sector and the government, ensuring that every Egyptian voice is heard and every recommendation is considered in the pursuit of a just and resilient energy future for Egypt. CEJ has a main interest in just and fair energy transition, which is very relevant to Egypt.

Their mission is to bridge the gap between decision-makers and the public, fostering a collaborative environment where every Egyptian has the power to shape the country’s energy future, and ensure that the global transition taking place is fair and equitable to Egypt (when it comes to Global North/South) and nationally where socio-economic inequality is widespread.

Egypt is a key country in the Middle East and North Africa due to its geopolitical relevance. The country is situated in a region that is very relevant to the global north, particularly Europe. Egypt is a main economic and political player in MENA.
Egypt's economy depends mainly on agriculture, media, petroleum exports, natural gas, and tourism. A rapidly growing population, limited arable land, and dependence on the Nile all continue to overtax resources and stress the economy.
Civic space is an essential matter to look into and work on in Egypt especially that in recent years, the Egyptian army has expanded its economic influence, dominating sectors such as petrol stations, fish-farming, car manufacturing, media, infrastructure including roads and bridges, and cement production. This hold on various industries has resulted in a suppression of competition, deterring private investment, and leading to adverse effects for ordinary Egyptians, including slower growth, higher prices, and limited opportunities.
Egypt has a developed energy market based on coal, oil, natural gas, and hydro power. Substantial coal deposits in the northeast Sinai are mined at the rate of about 600,000 tonnes (590,000 long tons; 660,000 short tons) per year. Oil and gas are produced in the western desert regions, the Gulf of Suez, and the Nile Delta. Egypt has huge reserves of gas, estimated at 2,180 cubic kilometres (520 cu mi), and LNG up to 2012 exported to many countries. In 2013, the Egyptian General Petroleum Co (EGPC) said the country will cut exports of natural gas and tell major industries to slow output this summer to avoid an energy crisis and stave off political unrest.
