The 5th Publish What You Pay (PWYP) Global Assembly will take place as an online event from Monday, 27 to Thursday, 30 June.
This Global Assembly is special. It marks the 20th anniversary of the Publish What You Pay campaign, launched in June 2002. Over the last 20 years, PWYP has become a powerful global movement of more than 1,000 member organisations campaigning for transparent and accountable extractive industries in more than 50 countries.
This year’s Global Assembly is a moment to celebrate PWYP members and their achievements, and to reflect on what it means for each of us to be part of this diverse, inspiring network!
Getting together will also give us the opportunity to dig into our priority campaigns and areas of work, with the help of outstanding speakers bringing their expertise and experiences on gender equality, contract disclosure and a just energy transition.
The Global Assembly will also be an opportunity to welcome the new Global Council members and validate several changes to the network’s governance and policies, on which members have been consulted over the past few months.
The world has changed significantly in the past 20 years. As the impact of the climate crisis becomes ever more present in our daily lives, this Global Assembly is a crucial moment to reflect on how to make sure that we are part of the solution to the main challenge of our time. For everything that has been achieved, there is a long way to go – and we believe that PWYP can and will be a source of cleaner, fairer future. Let’s make it happen!

AGENDA
DAY 1 – MONDAY 27
CELEBRATING 20 YEARS OF SUCCESS AND LOOKING FORWARD
12pm to 1:30pm UTC
Languages: English, French, Spanish, Russian, Arabic
Welcome to the 5th PWYP Global Assembly! In this first session, you will have the opportunity to hear some of the pioneers of the PWYP movement reflecting on two decades of campaigning for transparency in the extractive sector and hear young voices from the movement and their aspirations for PWYP. Mirtha Vásquez, former Prime Minister of Peru, lawyer and environmental advocate from Latin America and the Carribeans, a region in which PWYP is increasingly focusing, will deliver our keynote address, sharing her views on how natural resource governance activists can adapt to remain impactful over the next 20 years. Be ready for celebration, emotions, reflection and fun !
DAY 2 – TUESDAY 28
SECURING A JUST ENERGY TRANSITION FOR RESOURCE DEPENDENT COUNTRIES
12pm to 2pm UTC
Languages: English, French, Spanish, Russian
Climate action is urgent. As the world warms at an unprecedented pace, governments and companies need to act to rapidly phase out fossil fuel production in line with the scientific consensus to not exceed 1.5ºC of warming. Left unchecked, the forthcoming energy transition will be inadequate to tackle the climate crisis and unfair, undermining economies, livelihoods, energy access and citizen participation in resource dependent countries. PWYP members have a valuable role to play in securing a just and fair energy transition.
This session will explore the landscape and risks of the forthcoming energy transition, what that means for resource dependent countries and how PWYP can make a difference.
DAY 3 – WEDNESDAY 29
SESSION 1 / THINKING BEYOND THE NORMS TO FOSTER FEMINIST NATURAL RESOURCE GOVERNANCE
11am – 12:30pm UTC
Languages : English, French, Spanish, Russian
Natural resource extraction has often taken place at great cost to the health, environment and livelihoods of women and girls who are largely left out of decision-making and often have little access to the benefits. However, thanks to concerted efforts in recent years, gender equality is increasingly debated and taken into consideration in extractive sector governance. Various instruments including initiatives, policies, laws, practices and organisations’ projects, aim to enhance women’s participation and reduce the disproportionate impacts that the extractive sector has on them.
This session offers the possibility to hear extractive governance actors sharing concrete and inspirational experiences of their pro-gender actions. We will explore together innovative approaches to strengthening women’s rights, and identify collective opportunities for advocacy.
SESSION 2 / CONTRACT TRANSPARENCY: LESSON LEARNED AND FUTURE PROSPECTS
1pm – 2.30 pm UTC
Languages : English, French, Spanish, Russian
Extractive contract disclosure is key to transparency and good governance. It helps people understand the risks and rewards of extraction, prevents corruption, supports the energy transition, builds trust, and promotes accountability. At least 31 countries have a law for open deals, and mandatory publication has been endorsed by many extractive companies and international organisations. 55 countries implementing the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) standard have to disclose contracts. Yet, deals often remain secret.
Getting more countries disclosing contracts is the main objective of our global #DiscloseTheDeal campaign. It’s one year since the EITI standard made contract transparency a requirement and it’s time to check on how well that requirement is being implemented. This session will share experiences from different stakeholders and strategise on how we can collectively #DiscloseTheDeal.
DAY 4 – THURSDAY 30
LEADERSHIP AND GOVERNANCE: WORKING TOGETHER AS A GLOBAL MOVEMENT
12pm to 1:30pm UTC
Languages: English, French, Russian, Spanish, Arabic
The governance session is the business meeting of the PWYP Global Assembly, where the Global Council and international Secretariat report back on main achievements and challenges since the 2019 Global Assembly in Dakar, and the Global Assembly members adopt any new or updated policies and strategy. This year, members will adopt updates to the Governance Manual as well as a new Global Gender Policy. This session is also an opportunity for the newly elected Global Council to introduce themselves to the global PWYP membership. In 2022, with the departure of Elisa Peter as Executive Director of the PWYP international Secretariat, this session will also be an opportunity for Elisa to say goodbye to members and to welcome her successor.
SHOWCASING MEMBERS’ WORK
PWYP coalitions will be showcasing their work in online exhibition spaces which can be accessed at any time throughout the event. In addition to the ongoing networking opportunities that are available to anyone registered for the event, if you would like to facilitate a networking discussion, please let us know ([email protected])!
